Will Winx make it 30 in a row tonight?
Australia's super mare launches final campaign
|
Will jockey Hugh Bowman be able to flash A-OK after tonight's race, too? |
Australia’s super mare, Winx, tied for the #1 horse in the world with England’s Crackmore, will be trying to make it 30 wins in a row when she races tonight in the Grade 2 Apollo Stakes at Randwick Race Course.
The race from Randwick goes tonight at 10:50 p.m. Winnipeg time.
The main worry? The 7-furlong distance, according to trainer Chris Waller. Like trainer Don Schnell of Escape Clause, who is racing tomorrow in the Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita, 7-furlongs is a bit short especially since Winx doesn’t always get a good start. Tonight’s race, according to her connections, launches the final campaign for the 7-year-old mare. She is scheduled to race three more times after tonight, culminating in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April. She faces seven rivals tonight including a horse who is rated #2 in Australia, Happy Clapper.
ESCAPE CLAUSE ASSIGNED 6-1 ODDS FOR TOMORROW’S RACE: Manitoba’s own super mare, Escape Clause, has been assigned morning-line odds of 6-1 to win tomorrow’s ninth race at Santa Anita, the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes. She is one of seven in a highly competitive race that is scheduled to go shortly after 6 p.m. Winnipeg time.
If she wins, it will be CRAZY HOUR in the ASD Clubhouse!
