$6,223 carryover could result in lucrative payoff

A total of $6,223 will be carried over into the 15% ASD Pick-4 tonight and the pool could be close to $30,000 at post time if the last Pick-4 carryover is any indication. On July 5 the Pick-4 pool was over $28,000 and a $2 Pick-4 ticket paid $17,031.20. Hoping for more of the same!

Tonight’s carryover resulted from four winners last Saturday that paid $11.90, $3.80, $21.80 and $43.50. There were no tickets alive to Just Add Salt when he won the $15,000 Gold Strike Mile, which also happened to be the final leg of the Pick-4.

Just Add Salt came flying home late under jockey Janine Smith to upset heavy favourite Divine Wisdom in the Gold Strike Mile, triggering not only a Pick-4 carryover, but also a 20-cent Superfecta that paid $1,953.91.

Well back early in the one-mile race for 3-year-old Manitoba-bred colts and geldings, Just Add Salt was expected to stay there based on his 20-1 odds. He had different ideas. Stalking pressured fractions of 23.60 and 49.20, he was still six lengths behind the leaders after six furlongs in 1:15.60, but he was starting to move well along the inside on the turn for home.

By the time Just Add Salt got to the top of the stretch he was gaining fast and only 3 ½-lengths back of Divine Wisdom, who was in a determined drive to catch longshot pace battle winner Mysterious Magic.

Smith swung Just Add Salt to the outside for the drive and caught Divine Wisdom in deep stretch, just as he was taking over from Mysterious Magic. Divine Wisdom had nothing left for the winner at that point and Just Add Salt drew out to win by a ½-length. Mysterious Magic held the show, finishing 1 1/4-lengths behind Divine Wisdom. The final time for the mile over the fast track was 1:44.20.

Owned and trained by Chad Torevell, Just Add Salt was bred locally by Cam Ziprick. The 3-year-old Manitoba-bred gelding by Battle Cat-Let Salt Fly by Salt Lake paid $43.20 to win and earned $9,180 for his efforts.

Why couldn't you win that much in the Pick-4 tonight?
