Trainer Tom Gardipy Jr., Jockey Tim Moccasin and daugher and Kirt Contois after La Verendrye Stakes win.

Tom Gardipy Jr., Tim Moccasin and daughter, and Kirt Contois were all smiles after winning the La Verendrye on June 9. Can they do it again in the Canada Day?.

A plethora of short-priced horses rolled home to the delight of chalk players on Saturday night and one lucky bettor scored with a winning $1 Pick-5 ticket that paid $3,604.60.

Run N’ Snuggle ($5.40) dominated her field in the second race to kick off the Pick-5 with Rohan Singh up for owner Ron Zurba and trainer Emile Corbel. Coles Cave ($6.10) took advantage of a perfect trip under Robert Reeves Jr. to take the third race for owner-trainer Shelley Brown and partner Rusty Chaboyer, but watch out for second-place finisher Moved to Perma from the Wendell Matt stable in his next. He ran too good to lose.

Favorite Dance the Dance ($3.70) out-dueled a game Casino Kay to win the fourth with Rohan Singh up for John Ganas and trainer Blair Miller. The second win on the card for Singh moved him two victories closer to leading rider Paul Nolan, who didn’t win on Saturday night. Nolan now leads Singh 32-30 and the battle will continue tomorrow on a wide-open Canada Day card of nine races.

Call Me Misty ($4.20) continued the procession of favourites and short-priced horses in the fifth race under Tim Moccasin for trainer Marvin Buffalo and owner John Field, and Mixed Intent finally gave us a double digit payoff to end the Pick-5 when she wired the field in the sixth race under Jennifer Reid and paid $14.90 for owner-trainer Jared Brown and partner Susan Crane.

Considering the procession of low payoffs in the Pick-5 - $5.40, $6.10, $3.70, $4.20 and $14.90 – it actually paid good at $3,604.60. You can be sure the lone bettor that had the winning ticket wasn’t complaining.

The longshots could come out of hiding on Sunday with nine competitive races including the $30,000 Canada Day Stakes for fillies and mares. Favourite Ruby’s Big Band ships in from Texas and will be favoured over five rivals, but she will have to avoid a duel.

If you’re a sucker for heart, and most of us are, you’ll probably want to watch Honorable Lady at 3-1. She was put away in her last and came again late to win. She’s improved this year and she has unquestionable heart, but she will have her hooves full on the front end once again with Golden Stripe. The point being…

The Canada Day Stakes should be a great race!
