Manitoba proud! Goldencents takes on 10 rivals in $500,000 Cigar Mile Saturday.
The world champion colt with Manitoba breeding, Goldencents, is pointed to a race this Saturday, Nov. 27 that could solidify his chances of being named the top 3-year-old male of the year.
Fresh from winning the world championship $1 million Breeders' Cup Mile a month ago in California, Goldencents is entered in the $500,000 Cigar Mile, the biggest race of New York's fall meet.
The Cigar Mile will be a tough test for Goldencents, as he faces 10 rivals including Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Groupie Doll as well as Grade 1 winners Verrazano, Flat Out, Capo Bastone and Private Zone.
To mark the event, Assiniboia Downs will be honouring product innovator Phil Kives of "as seen on TV" fame; he's the Winnipegger who bred and raced Goldencents' mother, Golden Works, and grandmother, Body Works. The first 100 race fans at the track Saturday will receive a free photo sleeve of Goldencents and Body Works.

It should be a fabulous afternoon of simulcast racing, as Cigar Mile Day at Aqueduct will also feature the $400,000 Remsen for 2-year-olds; the $400,000 Demoiselle for 2-year-old fillies; and the Grade 3, $400,000 Comely for 3-year-old fillies.
Goldencents has already earned almost $2 million. Never has a horse with Manitoba breeding ever reached such stellar heights.
Much of his talent came from his grandmother, who was the fastest mare to have raced at Assiniboia Downs since 1990, the year in which North American race tracks adopted a uniform way of measuring a horse's speed. Racing from 1991-95, Body Works won 13 stakes races including the Manitoba Matron and Assiniboia Oaks, the top two stakes at Assiniboia Downs for female horses.
Before dying in a tragic accident in Kentucky, Body Works gave birth to Golden Works who, in turn, Kives sold to Kentucky interests, and she gave birth to Goldencents. Body Works was in foal again, Kives said, when she was spooked by a helicopter flying overhead and ran into another horse, breaking her neck.
Goldencents, at least, is doing her memory and all Manitobans, proud.
